Aqua Mirabilis — The Miracle Water
Giovanni Paolo Feminis (c. 1666–1736) was an Italian from the Val Vigezzo in Piedmont — a valley whose men emigrated north for work — who settled in Cologne and sold a distilled water he called Aqua Mirabilis. He marketed it as a medicine, because medicines could make claims and perfumes could not, and the distinction was worth money.
His significance is the handoff: Feminis passed the recipe to a relative from the same valley, and through that line it reached the Farina family. Every eau de cologne on earth descends from an emigrant Italian’s medicine bottle.
Eau de Cologne — Farina, 1709
Johann Maria Farina (1685–1766) — a Val Vigezzo emigrant and trained distiller, whose elder brother Giovanni Battista had founded the family firm in Cologne in 1709 — did something nobody had done: he made a fragrance that was only a fragrance. No claims, no medicine, just a light citrus spirit named for the city that made it, and the house eventually took his name.
A letter he is said to have written to his brother in 1708 gives the most quoted description in perfumery: a fragrance that reminded him of an Italian spring morning — mountain narcissus, orange blossom after rain. The letter’s exact wording is debated by historians and the romantic version is much repeated; what is not debated is the house, the date, and the fact that it never stopped trading.
Why it was possible. Farina had two things his predecessors lacked: reliable high-proof spirit, and Italian citrus distilled to a purity that could survive shipping. Cologne is not a formula so much as the first time supply chain met idea.
4711 — and Napoleon’s Law
Wilhelm Mülhens (1762–1841) was a Cologne merchant who acquired a recipe and built a house on the Glockengasse. When French revolutionary troops occupied the city in 1794 they numbered every building sequentially for billeting — a bureaucratic act that gave his address, and eventually his brand, the number 4711.
Then came the decree. In 1810 Napoleon Bonaparte — Emperor of the French, and the most consequential regulator in the history of perfumery, entirely by accident — ordered that makers of medicinal remedies must publish their formulas. The cologne houses faced a choice: disclose the recipe, or stop calling the product a medicine. They stopped calling it a medicine. Overnight, an entire industry re-labelled itself from remedy to toilet water, kept its secrets, and modern perfumery — a thing you wear, that promises nothing — was born of a compliance decision.
That is Mülhens’ law, and this book obeys it: the moment a scent claims to heal, the law stops treating it as a scent.
English Lavender Water
The English did not invent lavender; they industrialized it. Mitcham in Surrey grew a lavender whose oil is still the reference standard for the species — a chalk-soil terroir claim as real as any in wine — and houses like Yardley, the London soap and perfume firm which traces its origins to 1770, built an empire on it.
Culpeper had already told the English what lavender was for (Chapter II). Mitcham gave them the oil. The result is the most domestically embedded fragrance in Europe: in the linen press, on the handkerchief, and in the sickroom.
Eau de Portugal
Portugal’s sweet oranges were good enough that several languages simply renamed the fruit after the country — portokali in Greek, burtuqal in Arabic, portakal in Turkish. The scent followed the trade. Sweet orange oil is cheap, bright, universally liked and mercifully short-lived, which is exactly what you want in a room where the next customer sits down in ten minutes.
King’s Honey Water — Aqua Mellis
George Wilson (b. 1631 or 1632) was a London chemist whose Compleat Course of Chymistry ran through edition after edition and sits exactly on the hinge between alchemy and chemistry — the same volume offers an elixir of ground human skull against convulsions and hysteric fits. But his pitch for the honey water is a perfumer’s, not a physician’s: he says plainly that it “gives one of the most agreeable scents that can be smelt”.
The joke in the name. It is called honey water, and the honey keeps shrinking. Wilson’s version genuinely runs on it — a pound of virgin honey to the gallon of brandy. By the time the British Pharmaceutical Codex prints Aqua Mellis in 1911, the honey is down to forty-four grains in twenty fluid ounces: half of one percent. The name outlived the ingredient by two hundred years, which is either a lesson in branding or a warning about it.
Why it earns its place. Benzoin, storax, vanilla and warm spice laid over musk — that is the amber accord, assembled in a chemist’s shop a century before perfumery had a word for it. Chapter X’s Amber row traces the family to “apothecary spice waters.” This is one of them, with its weights intact.
Florida Water
Robert Murray, a New York druggist, put out a cologne in 1808 and named it for the Fountain of Youth — legendarily sought in Florida by Ponce de León. The house of Lanman & Kemp took it over and shipped it everywhere, and it became the standard American toilet water of the 19th century: splashed on the face, dabbed on a handkerchief, and poured into wash basins in the heat.
The interesting afterlife. Florida Water travelled with the shipping trade into Cuba, Peru, Haiti and the wider Caribbean, and was adopted into ritual practice — cleansing, blessing, offering — where it remains in daily use. A New York druggist’s cologne became a sacramental object in traditions he had never heard of. Very few products in this book have a stranger arc: born commercial, turned sacred, which is the exact reverse of Chapter I.
Kananga Water
The name is the plant: Cananga odorata, the ylang-ylang tree, whose Tagalog name means roughly “flower of flowers.” The colonial trade routes brought Indian Ocean ylang to the Caribbean, and the product followed the same path as Florida Water — commercial cologne into ritual water.
The material is worth knowing in its own right. Ylang is distilled in fractions off a single charge of blossoms: the first and richest cut is extra, then first, second and third grades follow as the still runs on, each lighter and cheaper than the last — one flower yielding a whole price ladder. The bulk of the world’s crop grows on the “perfume islands” of the Comoros and Madagascar, and the same intensely sweet, banana-and-jasmine floral that anchors Kananga Water also sits at the heart of Chanel N°5. It is a rare floral that behaves in soap and stays cheap enough to lead a splash — which is exactly why a 19th-century toilet water was built on it.
Bay Rum
Albert Heinrich Riise (1810–1882) was a Danish pharmacist who took the licence for St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies in 1838, and built an export business on the island’s own idea: bay leaves distilled in the rum that was already there. It is a colonial product in the most literal sense — a local plant, a plantation spirit, and a European pharmacist’s still — and it conquered the world’s barbershops.
The chemistry is honest: the rum is an astringent and antiseptic, bay leaf oil is warm and slightly medicinal, and on a freshly shaved face it does precisely what it appears to do.
Aromatic Vinegar — Vinaigre de Toilette
Same idea as the Four Thieves, minus the plague and the thieves: herbs in vinegar, now for the dressing table. It served three jobs at once — a skin wash that left the face astringent and cool, a scent for the handkerchief, and, in the silver vinaigrette bottles carried by Victorian women, a sharp restorative to be sniffed at a moment of faintness. The corset made this a growth market.
Mysore Sandal Soap
The First World War closed the export routes, and the Kingdom of Mysore — the world’s main source of sandalwood — found itself sitting on warehouses of oil it could not ship. Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV (r. 1894–1940), Maharaja of Mysore, a ruler famous for industrializing his state and for governing it well enough that Gandhi called it a model kingdom, made a decision that is still paying: if the oil cannot be exported, manufacture the finished product at home.
The Government Soap Factory opened in 1916. The company that grew from it, Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Ltd, is still state-owned, still making the soap, and the product carries a Geographical Indication — the sandalwood equivalent of an appellation. A blockade became a permanent national brand.
Vicks VapoRub
Lunsford Richardson (1854–1919) was a small-town North Carolina druggist who compounded a croup salve for his own children and named it after his brother-in-law, Dr. Joshua Vick. The 1918 pandemic did the rest: sales went from hundreds of thousands to millions, and a compounding-counter remedy became a global brand.
Its place in this book is structural. Chapter I opened with aromatics burned to be inhaled. Vicks is the same idea — camphor and menthol volatilizing off warm skin into the airway — with one modern difference: the formula is on the box, because the law requires it. Napoleon’s decree of 1810 wins in the end. The remedies that survived did so by publishing.
Tiger Balm
Aw Chu Kin (d. 1908) was a Hakka Chinese herbalist who ran a medicine shop in Rangoon and left his sons an unfinished ointment. Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par finished it, named it for the elder brother — Boon Haw means “gentle tiger” — moved the business to Singapore in the 1920s, and turned it into an empire large enough to fund newspapers, hospitals and the Haw Par Villa gardens. It is the great Overseas Chinese business story of the century, and it is a balm.
Why it is here. Every other traditional formula in this book had to be reconstructed, inferred, or accepted on a text’s word. Not this one. Because it is sold as a medicine, regulators require the composition on the label — so the Israeli Ministry of Health registration prints the percentages, in public, for anyone to read.
Olbas Oil
The name is said to come from oleum basileum — oil of Basel. It is the European sibling of Vicks and Tiger Balm, arrived at independently, and its roster is nearly identical: mint, eucalyptus, cajuput. Three continents, three companies, three decades apart, and all three landed on the same accord — which tells you the accord is not a fashion but a fact about human airways.
Note the wintergreen. Olbas is a licensed medicine, made under pharmaceutical control, with a printed dose and a child warning — which is precisely how methyl salicylate should be handled, and precisely why Chapter XI tells you not to handle it at all.

Read the table twice and a pattern appears: every great accord is a volatility ladder with overlapping rungs — something bright to arrive first, something aromatic to hand it off, something heavy to stay — and the handoffs work best when adjacent materials share molecules. That single sentence is most of perfumery.
The Soap Maker’s Workshop
The environment your fragrance must survive. Cold process soap is the harshest medium in the aromatic trades: a batter near pH 13 falling to a bar around pH 10, through a gel-phase exotherm of 70–80°C lasting hours, followed by weeks of open-air cure. Three failure modes account for nearly every disappointment: acceleration (spice and clove-family materials can seize the batter in seconds), discoloration (vanillin and eugenol brown the bar), and top-note flash-off (citrus terpenes simply leave during cure). Every rule below exists to beat one of those three.

Dosing. The working standard for cold process is a total fragrance load of 3% of oil weight — roughly 30 g per kilogram of oils — rising to 4% for citrus-led blends that must out-shout their own fading, always inside the applicable IFRA Category 9 (rinse-off) limit for each material. Paracelsus supplies the chapter’s motto: the dose alone makes the poison — and the European allergen rules supply the paperwork: linalool, limonene, geraniol, citronellol, eugenol, coumarin and their listed relatives must be declared on the label above 0.01% in rinse-off products.

The two laws this book keeps proving. First — Theophrastus’ law: light notes ride, heavy notes hold; build the ladder with overlapping rungs. Second — Mülhens’ law, learned from Napoleon’s decree of 1810: the claim on the label decides what the product legally is. Sell the scent, the ritual, and the story. History supplies all three in abundance; it never requires you to promise a cure.
